Shaping of space structures. Examples of applications of Formian in the design of tension-strut systems

The structures of the large span roof covers should be lightweight and that is why numerous types of various forms of the tension-strut systems are invented.

The main subject of the book is the presentation of the morphological method of shaping these systems by application of spatial modules having the suitable form of a tetrahedron or an octahedron. All the proposed structural systems are composed of struts and tension members. Each type of a spatial structure has to be pre-stressed in an appropriate way.

The programming language Formian has been invented by Professor Hoshyar Nooshin and developed by him and his team in the Space Structures Research Centre at the University of Surrey in England. It was intended as a tool for making these processes easier and faster and in order to create better co-operation between architects, civil engineers and other designers involved in the project. Formian makes possible fluent changes of the geometry of the structure at any stage of the design.

The Formian programmes defininq numerical models of the proposed types of the tension-strut spatial structures are published in the book, and they are also available on the author’s website: http://rebielak.arch.pwr.wroc.pl.
